MANCHESTER UNITED staged a sensational second-half fightback against Tottenham to move a step closer to reclaiming the Premier League title.
Darren Bent and Luka Modric had fired Spurs into a 2-0 lead at the break, giving Rafa Benitez’s title chasing Liverpool renewed hope.
But the game swung on 57 minutes, when Heurelho Gomes was adjudged to have brought down Michael Carrick by referee Howard Webb.The decision was a shocker, but Cristiano Ronaldo didn’t care, slotting home from the spot to start the comeback.
Wayne Rooney then kicked into overdrive, firing home twice either side of a second for Ronaldo in a four-minute blitz.
Dimitar Berbatov then prodded home No5 for the home side, to complete a sensational turnaround against his former club.
And with his side now three points clear with a game in hand, Alex Ferguson must surely know his 23rd season will end with his hands on the league championship trophy for the 11th time.
Aaron Lennon started out well, with some probing runs down the right causing problems for the United defence.
The first genuine chance came from the nippy winger, with Bent heading a cross straight at Edwin Van der Sar at the near post.
Spurs were getting physical, with some crunching tackles from Palacios and Jenas in the midfield.
As a result Ronaldo had a sighter at goal from a free kick, the Portuguese star claiming a handball in the wall.
But his appeals were turned down, and soon after Tottenham opened the scoring on 29 minutes courtesy of Bent.
Lennon powered down the right, before his ball back saw Vedran Corluka curl the ball in from a deeper position.
England striker Bent fluffed his headed first attempt, but the ball dropped kindly for him to thrash home from inside six yards.
Worse was to follow for United four minutes later when Lennon swung over another cross from the same flank, this time beyond all the United defenders.
Modric was free to chest the ball down, before stabbing home at the near post.
The visiting fans were almost as stunned as their hosts given Tottenham have not won a league game at Old Trafford since 1989.
Gomes was then called into action three times before the break, as Ferguson’s men looked to get back into the game.
The Brazilian got behind Rafael’s long-range effort, before producing a fine stop from Ronaldo.
Jonathan Woodgate was booked for a foul on the winger, whose free-kick cannoned back off the Spurs wall.
Ronaldo then unleashed a lob towards the top corner, only for Gomes to claw the ball out.
The stopper was also equal to a powerful shot from Rooney before Jermaine Jenas was booked for a foul on Darren Fletcher.
Ferguson introduced Carlos Tevez for Nani at the interval, but it was an intervention from referee Howard Webb that got his side back into the game.
Amid the pandemonium that followed his penalty decison, Ronaldo kept his head to score from the spot.
Tevez then made his first contribution 10 minutes later, setting up Rooney for the equaliser with a flicked pass.
The England striker cut inside before shooting low and beating Gomes at his near post.
Within a minute, United were in front, Rooney this time providing the cross which a diving Ronaldo headed in.
United were not finished as Ronaldo picked out Rooney with a far-post cross.
The England striker beat Gomes but it seemed Woodgate would clear only for the defender to drag the ball over the line as he slid in to block.
United's fifth arrived 11 minutes from time, Rooney providing the cross this time for former Spurs hitman Berbatov to finish.
The Bulgarian belted home after Gomes had stopped his initial header and then got in a tangle with Jenas.

EARTH DAY
Earth Day, celebrated April 22, is a day designed to inspire awareness and appreciation for the Earth's environment. It was founded by U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson as an environmental teach-in in 1970 and is celebrated in many countries every year. This date is Spring in the Northern Hemisphere and Autumn in the Southern Hemisphere.
The United Nations celebrates an Earth Day each year on the March equinox, which is often March 20, a tradition which was founded by peace activist John McConnell in 1969.

Scientist Stephen Hawking 'ill' in hospital
Scientist Stephen Hawking, the author of "A Brief History Of Time", is "very ill" in hospital, Cambridge University said Monday.
Hawking is Lucasian professor of mathematics at Cambridge.
Although he has been in the job since 1979, Hawking became an international figure through his best-selling 1988 book on cosmology, "A Brief History Of Time", which examines complex concepts like the Big Bang and black holes.
It was followed in 2001 by another book, "The Universe In A Nutshell", television documentary appearances and even cameos in popular television shows like "The Simpsons" and "Star Trek: The Next Generation".
He has received a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) as well as a string of honorary degrees.
Hawking has always insisted he is determined not to let his physical condition get in the way of his work.
"I try to lead as normal a life as possible and not think about my condition or regret the things it prevents me from doing, which are not that many," he once said.
Arizona State University in the United States announced earlier this month that Hawking had cancelled a planned appearance on April 5 because he was recovering from a chest infection and doctors had advised him not to fly.
Earlier this year, it was reported that the Discovery Channel would screen "Stephen Hawking's Universe", a new three-part special exploring the nature of the cosmos to be screened in 2010.

Malaysia short of engineers
PETALING JAYA: Malaysia is facing a shortage of engineers, which will impede the country’s development, said Institute of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) president Prof Datuk Chuah Hean Teik.
He said there was a need to train more engineers before the situation became critical, adding that the country would need about 200,000 engineers by 2020.
Currently, there are only 60,000 engineers in the country, Prof Chuah said.
“We should plan ahead and not wait until there is an acute shortage,” he said after IEM’s 50th anniversary dinner and awards night at One World Hotel here on Saturday.
He urged parents to encourage their children to consider engineering as it was a stable career and, additionally, would enable them to branch into other sectors.
“Students who pursue engineering are taught to think analytically and critically.
“This kind of training provides them with skills to go into other careers such as banking, teaching and management,” he said.
At the dinner, former Works Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Zin Mohamed was made an IEM Hono- rary Fellow.
The IEM 50th Anniversary commemorative stamp and first-day cover were also unveiled at the dinner and will go on sale today at post offices nationwide.

FINAL PIALA FA : SELANGOR VS KELANTAN
TANDUKAN ketua pasukan, Amri Yahyah pada minit ke-90 membawa Selangor ke perlawanan akhir Piala FA menerusi kemenangan 2-1 ke atas Perlis pada aksi separuh akhir kedua di Stadium Shah Alam, malam tadi.
Selangor mara dengan agregat 3-2 selepas kedua-dua pasukan terikat 1-1 pada perlawanan pertama di Kangar, 7 April lalu.
Beraksi di hadapan 30,000 penyokong sendiri, Selangor bermula garang menerusi dua percubaan berbahaya daripada Safee Sali pada minit ketujuh dan ke-11, namun kedua-duanya tidak menepati sasaran.
Usaha tuan rumah untuk mencari gol pembukaan berhasil pada minit ke-15 menerusi tandukan Amri, menyempurnakan hantaran Rudie Ramli dari sebelah kanan untuk menewaskan penjaga gol Perlis, Farizal Marlias.
Perlis bagaimanapun hanya memerlukan dua minit untuk menyamakan kedudukan apabila rembatan leret Azi Shahril Azmi dari luar kotak penalti gagal diselamatkan penjaga gol Selangor, Hamsani Ahmad.
Selepas itu, Selangor terus garang dan hampir mendahului pada minit ke-32 tetapi sepakan percuma D. Surendran dari jarak 25 meter berjaya ditepis keluar Farizal menjadikan kedudukan 1-1 kekal sehingga waktu rehat.
Baru seminit babak kedua bersambung, Selangor memiliki peluang terbaik untuk menambah jaringan tetapi percubaan daripada Safee terkena tiang gol.
